Dundee is the regional city of Tayside and Scotland's fourth city. Having undergone
a regeneration in recent years - symbolised by the return of Captain Scott's famous polar

exploration ship, RRS Discovery, and the slogan
' City of Discovery ' - Dundee's traditional industries of jute, jam and journalism
have been replaced by the likes of technology and biotech companies. Of the three Js, only
journalism remains, in the form of DC Thomson Ltd, publishers of the Courier, Sunday Post and
Beano.
For the home owner, Dundee offers a wide range of choice, from Victorian mansions and smart
private housing estates to traditional tenement flats and former council housing stock, at
prices that are affordable compared to Edinburgh or St Andrews.
A short drive north east of Dundee is the port of Arbroath. Famous as the scene of the
signing of the Declaration of Scottish Independence in 1320, the town grew to prominence for a
second time in the 19th century as a centre of the flax and engineering industries. With its
fishing harbour as its focal point - famous for the Arbroath Smokie - it also became a popular
seaside holiday resort. Today, following a downturn in its fortunes in past decades, the town
is growing in prosperity again.
